Former Cancún Hospital to Transform Into Specialty Women’s Health Center

A cluttered urban scene depicting a large accumulation of assorted waste and debris in front of dilapidated structures with overgrown vegetation and graffiti-covered walls.

The Quintana Roo Government has proposed to convert the former Cancún General Hospital site, located in Supermanzana 65, into a specialized obstetrics and gynecology center. This plan was announced by Governor Mara Lezama and is part of a series of initiatives being overseen by Zoé Robledo, the General Director of IMSS.

It's still undecided whether the new center will operate under the IMSS or the IMSS Wellbeing scheme. This proposal comes in light of recent data from INEGI, which reported 25,187 births in Quintana Roo in 2024, underscoring the need for dedicated maternal and child care facilities.

The old hospital building has been vacant since 2017 and is currently home to over 30 homeless individuals. The transformation of this abandoned site into a healthcare facility would not only address the region's healthcare needs but could also potentially provide a solution to the homelessness issue.
