Mexico City — A leak in a Pemex pipeline caused a hydrocarbon spill that has contaminated the Gulf of Mexico for weeks, leading to the removal of three workers, according to official reports.

After repeated evasions, the state-owned company acknowledged that the incident stemmed from an irregular intervention in the infrastructure, which released fuel and caused damage in the maritime zone. Upon detecting the leak, Pemex staff deployed actions to contain the spill and prevent further environmental harm.

As part of initial investigations, Pemex decided to separate three employees allegedly linked to the events from their duties while inquiries continue to assign responsibility.

The company said it activated safety and emergency response protocols and implemented cleanup work in the affected area.

The case adds to other recent incidents at Pemex facilities, amid questions about infrastructure maintenance and oversight mechanisms in its operations.
