Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The government of Playa del Carmen, through the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, has collected more than 2.5 tons of general trash and waste during seabed clean-up campaigns in the first eight months of the year.

Samantha Álvarez, head of the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, stated that the priority is to protect and conserve the natural environment as a fundamental part of the public policies established in the 2024-2027 Municipal Development Plan (PMD) of municipal president Estefanía Mercado.

“The beaches are an essential part of our tourist appeal and are considered among the best in international destinations, which is why it is important to keep them clean, not only to attract more tourists but also to protect the marine ecosystem,” said Álvarez.

During the first week of September, a clean-up operation was carried out at Caribe beach, where the environmental education team from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) collected 0.3 kg of aluminum, 57.3 kg of general trash, 1.4 kg of glass, and removed 1.6 kg of broken glass.

Meanwhile, at Xaman-Há beach, 0.3 kg of aluminum, 1 kg of glass, 13.2 kg of general trash, 4.5 kg of iron, 27.5 kg of wood, and 4 kg of fiber were collected.

Samantha Álvarez reported that these types of seabed clean-up campaigns will continue throughout the year to guarantee beach certification with the Blue Flag and Playa Platino distinctions.
