QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — The Mexican government is fully engaged in the creation of electric vehicles to provide a more economical option for its citizens, one of which is Olinia, a line of small electric cars to be developed in the country. Recent announcements have provided further details on the project.
This initiative will enter the market with the guarantee of offering Mexicans a safe, effective, and sustainable urban mobility alternative. Although full details are still forthcoming, it is now possible to discuss the models that will be sold.
Models and Pricing for Olinia Electric Vehicles
The proposal includes three units designed for urban mobility in Mexico: a compact automobile for personal use, a mototaxi useful for short trips in neighborhoods, and a last-mile vehicle to be employed for light logistics and product delivery.
The estimated cost is the most attention-grabbing aspect: it will range between 90,000 and 150,000 pesos, an affordable price compared to traditional options. It is conceived especially for students, small-scale merchants, delivery drivers, and families seeking an economical and ecological option.
The final design will be unveiled in September 2025. Production will begin in the first months of 2026, and the initial prototypes are anticipated to be available for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. A pilot fleet is expected to be presented in June 2026, which will then be evaluated in various cities across the country.
Entities Responsible for Building the Olinia Electric Car in Mexico
According to data provided by the Government of Mexico, multiple institutions are involved in the realization of the Olinia project. The National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM) are cooperating on the creation and design of the prototype for these electric automobiles through ten strategic lines.
Specifically, this team—comprised of technical coordinators, teachers, and expert researchers—is responsible for the embedded systems, which include the software for the supervision, operation, communication, and control of the units.
