No Dialogue Between Parking Meter Concessionaire and Street Vendors Over Space Use in Playa del Carmen

Street vendors in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Despite complaints from the company Promotora de Reordenamiento Urbano, the concessionaire for parking meter services in Playa del Carmen, about street vendors occupying spaces, it has not sought to open dialogue with vendor unions to address the situation.

Cristino Cohuo Martín, the street vendor commissioner for the CROC union, announced that while there was initial communication when the parking meter operation began, the company—known as Playaparq—has not made any recent approaches.

He indicated that after the city government’s reorganization of street vending, around 40 stalls affiliated with the CROC remain in the city center.

He also explained that during the holiday season, out-of-town vendors often appear to take advantage of tourist traffic, a situation he said falls under the purview of the Directorate of Inspection and Collections.
