Cancún, Quintana Roo — A National Guard member drowned in a cenote in Cancún on Wednesday night while socializing with friends during his day off, authorities reported.
The deceased, identified as an active National Guard member known by the nickname “El Canche,” was at the Aluxes social events palapa in the El Ramal Norte neighborhood when the incident occurred.
According to witnesses at the scene, the man decided to enter the cenote located within the property at some point during the evening. After submerging himself, he did not resurface, causing alarm among those present.
Some attendees attempted to locate and assist him in the water but were unable to find him in time. As minutes passed without any sign of the man, concern grew among the group.
The report mobilized security personnel, who cordoned off the area upon arrival to facilitate operations at the site. Personnel from the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) later recovered the body.
The location remained under guard while authorities conducted corresponding procedures and collected testimonies from witnesses. The body was transported for legal procedures, and agents from the Ministerial Police launched an investigation to determine how the incident occurred.
The area remained cordoned off for several hours as forensic work continued at the cenote.
