Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The mother of a woman killed in a 2024 femicide inaugurated a mural in her daughter’s honor on Wednesday, accompanied by members of the women’s collective “Siempre Unidas.” Rosa López, mother of victim Mariel García, also demanded the arrest of two of the five alleged perpetrators who remain at large.
López said the mural, located near the Women’s Justice Center at the intersection of Avenida 115 and Calle 38 Norte, will serve as a public reminder of the crime. “So that women who pass here know that she was a victim of femicide, know that she died at the hands of five men, of whom two are free, and of those detained, two have received the maximum sentence,” she declared.
She recalled that her daughter’s disappearance was reported in late January 2024. Authorities found her remains in March of that year in a wooded area of the irregular settlement Los Sauces in Puerto Aventuras.
Since 2024, authorities have detained three people for the crime, including José de Jesús “N,” who is accused of planning the murder. López vowed to continue seeking justice for the two fugitives. “First God and man’s justice,” she concluded.
Mariel García, originally from Veracruz, moved to Playa del Carmen in 2022 with her partner. In October 2023, she began working for a civil association called “El Sauce Solidaridad.”
Investigators traced her final hours, determining her last communication was on January 27. The following day, dressed in black, she left her office, made a purchase from a street vendor, and then headed toward the highway, where her trail went cold.
The mural was painted by artist Florencia Gigena.
