Cancun, Quintana Roo — A tense standoff erupted in the early hours of Monday in Cancun’s Galaxias Guadalupana neighborhood, where a mob attempted to lynch a man accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl. The crowd set fire to the suspect’s motorcycle before he surrendered to police.
The incident began after the girl returned home and told her mother she had been assaulted. The news spread quickly through the community, prompting residents to gather outside the suspect’s home demanding justice.
As the crowd grew hostile, they spotted a motorcycle belonging to the suspect parked on the street and set it ablaze. The fire sent a column of flames into the air as the man barricaded himself inside his house.
Fearing the mob would break in, the suspect emerged and voluntarily surrendered to municipal police officers who had arrived to restore order. Officers escorted him away under a heavy security operation and transported him to the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE).
The 12-year-old victim received immediate psychological and medical care from a specialized team at the FGE, which has opened an investigation. Authorities expect the suspect to be brought before a judge in the coming hours to determine his legal status and any precautionary measures.
