Missing Man Found Dead on Holbox Island as Disappearance Crisis Grows in Northern Quintana Roo

Map of northern Quintana Roo highlighting Holbox and Lázaro Cárdenas

Holbox, Quintana Roo — Authorities have deactivated the search notice for Héctor Joaquín N., a 33-year-old man reported missing on April 4 from the island of Holbox, in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas. Residents are demanding answers as the region grapples with a surge in disappearances.

The State Prosecutor’s Office has not released details on his whereabouts or the circumstances of his discovery. However, unofficial reports and the deployment of forensic personnel suggest a fatal outcome, fueling concern in the community.

Héctor Joaquín was last seen on the island three weeks ago. Family and locals launched a search campaign while prosecutors remained tight-lipped. That silence contrasted with activity on Monday, when witnesses reported a forensic unit escorted by official patrols in Kantunilkín, along with ministerial vehicles.

Not until Thursday night did the official system mark the search notice as inactive. No statement has confirmed whether the body showed signs of violence or the cause of death, leaving residents in uncertainty.

The case adds to a string of recent disappearances in the region. So far in 2026, Lázaro Cárdenas has recorded at least four high-impact cases:

  • José Daniel Gutiérrez Gómez, missing since March 26.
  • Yucatecan merchants Luis Téllez Téllez (23, from Valladolid) and Pedro Pablo Canul Poot (28, from Tekom), missing since April 2.
  • The unresolved case of Michelle Salinas, last seen in November 2025 on Holbox, with suspicions of clandestine burial in the local cemetery.
  • The discovery of the remains of 14-year-old Ángel Rubén Mazum Casanova, missing since February 2025 in Ignacio Zaragoza, identified months later.

The Quintana Roo Search Commission has also reactivated files of people missing between 2020 and 2024, highlighting growing vulnerability in areas once considered safe.
