In a bid to strengthen the twinning relationship with Miami Beach, the island of Cozumel is set to receive a donated rescue vehicle. The generous donation was announced during a recent visit by Mayor Juanita Alonso Marrufo.
The Vice Mayor of Miami Beach, Kristen Rosen González, pledged the rescue vehicle during her visit in February. Upon its arrival, the vehicle will be incorporated into the Civil Protection Department, Firefighters and Lifeguards heritage on the island.
Mayor Alonso had a meeting with Rosen González, Fire Chief Miguel Anchía, and Lucy Delgado, who has been instrumental in fostering the bond of friendship and cooperation between the two sister cities. The Mayor expressed her gratitude to the Vice Mayor for reinforcing this exchange of experiences that spans over three decades and for providing Cozumel with the mobile unit.
The local government of Cozumel has taken necessary steps to adhere to customs and donation procedures with the Treasury to avoid import costs. In the near future, the rescue unit, along with various firefighting equipment, will be shipped from Port Everglades, Florida.
Once in Cozumel, the rescue vehicle will be a valuable addition to the Civil Protection Department, Firefighters and Lifeguards.
The vehicle will be stationed at the Emergency Center during the holiday season to provide first responder assistance. It will also be available at the Fire Station to transport individuals requiring immediate attention in the event of an accident.
