Mexico City–Toluca High-Speed Train Fully Inaugurated, Marking Major Infrastructure Milestone

Mexico City — Mexico has officially completed and inaugurated the long-awaited interurban train connecting downtown Mexico City (Observatorio) with the city of Toluca, marking a major step forward in the country’s transportation infrastructure.

Known as El Insurgente, the rail line now operates across its full 58-kilometer route after the final section linking Santa Fe to Observatorio opened earlier this year. The project, first announced in 2012 and under construction for more than a decade, connects the State of Mexico with the capital in roughly 45 minutes to one hour—cutting travel times that previously exceeded two hours by road.

The cost of a full one-way trip between Observatorio and Toluca is approximately 90 pesos (about $5–6 USD), depending on the route taken, making it an affordable alternative to buses and private vehicles.

The train includes seven stations and is fully electrified, with modern rolling stock capable of speeds up to 160 km/h. It is also integrated into Mexico City’s broader transportation network through the Observatorio hub, where passengers can connect to the Metro and regional bus systems.

Officials say the project is expected to eventually move more than 100,000 passengers per day, easing congestion in one of the country’s busiest commuter corridors while improving regional mobility and economic connectivity.

The inauguration comes amid a broader push by the federal government to revive passenger rail in Mexico. Additional high-speed rail projects—including planned lines linking Mexico City with Querétaro and Pachuca—are already under construction or in advanced planning stages.

Together, these projects signal a renewed investment in large-scale infrastructure, with rail once again positioned as a key component of Mexico’s economic development and urban mobility strategy.
