Mexico City — Mexico’s anonymous tip line 089 has prevented 88% of extortion attempts since its formal launch in July 2025, authorities announced Tuesday during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference.
Omar García Harfuch, head of the Public Security Department, presented results from the National Anti-Extortion Strategy, revealing that the hotline has fielded more than 180,000 calls since implementation. The system has become a key tool for protecting businesses, producers, and families across the country.
“The success of this strategy lies in immediate support for victims,” García Harfuch said. “We’re moving from reactive response to active prevention.”
Prevention and Prosecution Results
While 88% of extortion attempts were prevented through the hotline’s intervention, 11% — equivalent to 20,532 cases — were completed. However, information gathered from these incidents led authorities to open more than 6,000 investigation files, strengthening judicial action against perpetrators.
The real-time response capability has been crucial, officials emphasized, with coordination between federal, state, and local agencies enabling prompt intervention.
Arrests Across Multiple States
As a result of tips and interagency coordination, authorities have made arrests in 24 states. Notable cases include:
- 28 suspects detained in Gómez Palacio, Durango, identified as members of a criminal organization
- Two alleged members of La Familia Michoacana arrested in the State of Mexico, linked to extortion and homicide
- José Armando, alias “Callejas,” arrested in Tlaxcala as the leader of an extortion and kidnapping network operating in Guerrero
These arrests are part of broader National Security Strategy results showing 49,530 people detained for various crimes between October 2024 and March 2026.
Professional Training Expansion
García Harfuch also announced plans to strengthen institutional coordination through the creation of a Command School at the National Public Security Academy. The school will focus on tactical training, operational coordination, and human rights compliance for security personnel.
“The relevant data isn’t just the volume of calls, but our real-time intervention capacity,” the official said. “This shift from reaction to active prevention could redefine how this crime impacts local economies.”
