Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has called for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to receive a fair trial, following his detention on January 3 in Caracas after a US military intervention and his subsequent transfer to New York, where he faces drug trafficking charges.
During her morning conference at the National Palace, the president emphasized that, once detained, the fundamental priority is to guarantee a legal process adhering to justice. “In this case, with President Maduro already detained, what one asks for is always a fair trial,” she stated, noting that there must be speed and legality in the process.
Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s historical stance of rejecting US intervention, affirming that, regardless of opinions about the Venezuelan government, her administration condemns Washington’s military “invasion.”
The president recalled that Mexican foreign policy is guided by the principles of non-intervention, peaceful resolution of disputes, and legal equality of states, and highlighted that international cooperation for development is the best way to support any country.
Since Maduro’s detention, the Mexican Government has reiterated its defense of the sovereignty of peoples. Additionally, last Sunday it issued a joint statement with Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, and Uruguay, in which they rejected unilateral military actions on Venezuelan territory and expressed concern about any attempt at external control of strategic resources.
