Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The Mexican government has officially launched the Podecibi Quintana Roo (Circular Economy Development Pole for Wellbeing), a project that reclassifies massive sargassum influxes from an environmental crisis into a resource for scientific research, technological innovation, and industrial development.
Published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), the declaration establishes Puerto Morelos as the hub’s location, leveraging its logistics and academic infrastructure within the Cancún–Puerto Morelos–Playa del Carmen corridor.
The project aims to coordinate government, private sector, and research institutions to address the tourism, environmental, and economic challenges posed by sargassum. The Scientific Research Center of Yucatán (CICY) is a key participant, formalizing its interest in operating within Podecibi since January 2026.
“Sargassum is no longer just an environmental problem; today it has economic, tourism, health, and political implications that require a comprehensive strategy based on science and innovation,” said Dr. Adán Caballero Vázquez, a CICY researcher.
CICY’s research lines include analyzing emissions from decomposing sargassum, studying associated fauna such as fish and invertebrates, extracting metals, fibers, and fats for commercial use, and developing solutions to reduce massive arrivals along the Greater Caribbean coast.
Private sector leaders have also urged faster action. Sergio León Cervantes, vice president of Americas Alliance, proposed creating a “Sargassum Council” to replace emergency response schemes and coordinate resources for science and industry. The council would integrate all levels of government, private enterprise, and civil society; offer tax and operational incentives to attract processing companies; and require quarterly reports from firms on their contribution to regional cleanup.
With this declaration, Quintana Roo enters a new phase where sargassum shifts from a problematic waste to a raw material for the economy of the future.
