Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities have shut down illegal activities in the coastal area of Xcalacoco after detecting the unauthorized discharge of sanitary waste from a construction site into the sea.

The Playa del Carmen government, through its Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, said the intervention came after a citizen complaint early Sunday. A tourist passing through the area noticed foul odors and recorded video of what appeared to be portable toilet waste being emptied directly onto the shoreline.

According to the official report, the property is linked to a housing development associated with the Sandos Caracol resort complex.

After receiving the alert, inspectors from the Directorate of Normativity and Environmental Impact Assessment, along with personnel from ZOFEMAT (the federal maritime-terrestrial zone authority), went to the site to verify the report.

During the inspection, officials confirmed actions that violate the ecological balance of the coastal ecosystem. They ordered an immediate suspension of activities and initiated administrative proceedings to determine responsibilities and possible penalties.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward practices that harm the environment and emphasized the administration’s commitment to protecting natural resources and strictly enforcing environmental regulations.

Authorities also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the federal maritime-terrestrial zone, stressing that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility.
