Cancún — Meteorologist Juan Antonio Palma has forecast that cold front number 30 could cause temperatures to drop as low as 7 degrees Celsius in the coming days in the Maya Zone of Quintana Roo.
He also predicts that tomorrow, in the northern zone of Quintana Roo, rains are expected, followed by strong wind, so it is possible that on the coasts there will be gusts of more than 60 kilometers per hour.
“Once the rains and strong wind pass, which will be this Monday and part of Tuesday, is when this piece of cold air completely covers us and temperatures will decrease. We are talking about in localities like Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José María Morelos, as well as in the south of Yucatán and center of Campeche, it could dawn during the week around 7 and 10 degrees,” he detailed.
In the coastal zone of Quintana Roo, the temperature will not drop as much, because the sea “regulates,” but it is forecast that the thermometer will mark 14 or 15 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
He commented that these cold masses began arriving to the Yucatán Peninsula 15 days ago, which has caused a drop in temperature, but now “it is one of the most powerful in recent years,” caused by a phenomenon called the “Polar Vortex,” which expels cold air to the northern region of America, which will cause the cold to prolong until mid-February.
The specialist assured that this cold front is part of the winter system that has affected both the Yucatán Peninsula, as well as the northern zone of the country and the United States, where there have been large snowfalls.
“It is important to clarify that snow and ice are not going to reach us, we are going to get the last of it, but even so it will be a mass of Arctic air,” added the interviewee.
Furthermore, he indicated that “as if this were not enough,” after the cold front another low-pressure system is expected to form in the region, which will drive another cold front for Saturday, so the temperature could drop below 5 degrees Celsius in Quintana Roo, accompanied by strong winds.
“Now it really is going to be a tremendous winter storm and well, we have to be prepared. So, from today and until possibly mid-February the arrival of these frontal systems will be constant, we have to be alert, especially for respiratory illnesses due to the cold, sailors for the swell and wind and also take care of ourselves from the rains,” he warned.
Palma considered that, because of this, specialists believe this winter season could be one of the coldest that has been recorded in the Yucatán Peninsula in the last 20 years.
