Mérida, Yucatán — The city will open two new spaces dedicated to teaching and strengthening the Maya language, according to Marcos Pech Naal, head of the Municipal Institute for the Strengthening of the Maya Language.
Pech Naal said the new locations will be open to everyone. Children from ages 8 to 14 can enroll in educational courses, while people 15 and older can take specialized workshops for learning Maya, he said.
He recalled that during the current municipal administration, the city has promoted the language through various efforts. Recently, new teaching centers opened to the public with preferential rates, including the Cholul Cultural Center, the Southern Cultural Center and the José Martí Cultural Center.
He said these centers have helped increase interest in learning the Maya language, with a dropout rate of just 20 percent, attributed to various factors.
Pech Naal also emphasized that promotion efforts extend to public and private schools, where the active learning and use of Maya is encouraged among new generations to ensure the survival of the region’s linguistic legacy.
