Quintana Roo, Mexico — Health officials in Quintana Roo confirmed 12 new measles cases in the past week, bringing the state’s total for 2026 to 151 confirmed infections and placing it tenth nationally for incidence rates.
The new cases, reported between March 31 and April 7, indicate the virus remains active in the state. With 96 days elapsed in the year, the average incidence stands at 1.55 cases detected daily, showing no significant signs of a slowdown in transmission.
This sustained growth marks a sharp contrast with 2025, when Quintana Roo recorded only two measles cases for the entire year and ranked among the regions with the lowest incidence. The 2026 surge represents a significant shift in the epidemiological trend, with infections now appearing more widely across the state.
Cancún, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Chetumal are the municipalities with the highest number of cases and are considered priority zones, though health authorities are urging all residents to check their vaccination status.
The state’s health sector continues its preventive vaccination campaign across all 11 municipalities, setting up modules in health centers and strategic locations. The state government aims to administer 376,000 vaccines over a 10-week period, currently in its ninth week. Separately, the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) plans to administer 200,000 doses without a fixed deadline.
Officials report vaccination efforts are more than 50% toward their goals, though they have not provided specific figures.
The local business community has called for strengthened prevention measures, citing increased international travel ahead of the upcoming soccer World Cup. The Health Commission of Quintana Roo’s employers’ confederation stated that public health is integral to the visitor experience and the confidence the region projects as a destination.
“The world today demands destinations that are not only attractive but reliable. Public health is part of the visitor experience and the certainty we offer as a country,” the commission said.
