Mauricio Duhart Dies From Injuries in Cancun Ice Cream Shop Explosion

Mauricio Duhart, victim of the ice cream shop explosion in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Mauricio Duhart Castillo, who was critically injured in an explosion at his ice cream shop on Avenida Tulum earlier this month, died Wednesday morning, his family confirmed.

In a Facebook post, Astrid Duhart González, a relative, announced that Mauricio passed away on April 22 after weeks fighting severe burns and injuries from the blast.

“With deep pain in our hearts, we want to share that Mau passed away during the early morning,” the family wrote.

The explosion occurred around 4 p.m. on April 3 at “Marea Helada,” an ice cream shop in Cancun’s Supermanzana 20 that was about to open. Mauricio was trapped inside and rescued by neighbors who heard his cries for help. He suffered third-degree burns over much of his body and had been in intensive care since.

His partner, Pamela, was also injured by the shockwave and flying glass but her injuries were not life-threatening.

Authorities from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office, firefighters, and civil protection personnel investigated the incident. Preliminary findings suggest a gas buildup in the kitchen area may have caused the explosion.

The family thanked the community for donations, messages, and prayers. “Mau was a deeply special person. A man who always acted with love, kindness, and an inspiring intelligence,” they said.
