Maya Council and Governor Set Priorities for 2026

Governor Mara Lezama meeting with members of the Great Maya Council in Chetumal

Chetumal, MX. — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa held a meeting with members of the Great Maya Council to guarantee their rights, the well-being and prosperity of families through actions that strengthen and preserve their customs and traditions so they can be better recognized.

The head of the state executive explained that during the meeting they discussed the balance of actions carried out during this concluding year, 2025, in order to provide greater well-being to their families and communities in 2026 and to settle the historical debt inherited from past governments.

Mara Lezama said that her humanist government with a feminist heart has undertaken actions that bring social justice to indigenous peoples in order to close inequality gaps, while always caring for the preservation of their customs and traditions.

The Governor reiterated that she signed the New Agreement for Well-being and Development so that the inhabitants of the Maya zone are included and recognized in tourism projects like Maya Kaan, one of the 12 destinations in Quintana Roo with the greatest growth and tourism potential.

Also so that embroiderers, hammock weavers, artisans, wood carvers, and producers of preserved products can access social programs with direct support and thus expand their products in international markets through digital platforms like Hecho en Quintana Roo, she stated.

Mara Lezama commented that as part of strengthening the great Maya culture, the Museum of the Caste War in the community of Tihosuco, municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, has been restored, keeping alive the memory of a strong and rebellious people.

“In this new way of governing, we value the great and ancient Maya culture and its guardians, who are living history with deep roots. Therefore, we will continue to demonstrate with facts and firm actions so that indigenous peoples never again live in abandonment,” emphasized Mara Lezama. (Source: Government of Quintana Roo)
