Cancún, Quintana Roo — A judge has sentenced a man to 25 years in prison for the murder of a mototaxi driver in Cancún, a crime authorities say stemmed from a romantic dispute.

Raúl Aldahir Concilión Verónico was found guilty of aggravated homicide by a court in Quintana Roo, the State Prosecutor’s Office announced. In addition to the prison term, he was ordered to pay a fine of 134,430 pesos and 717,002 pesos in moral damages to the victim’s family.

The fatal shooting occurred on November 30, 2021, in the Supermanzana 259 neighborhood. According to the investigation, the victim was driving a red mototaxi when Concilión Verónico, traveling in a white Nissan Tsuru, caught up to him and fired a gun, inflicting fatal injuries.

The mototaxi driver was gravely wounded and later died. Witness statements and evidence gathered by prosecutors established that the motive was related to a personal conflict. Investigators determined the victim had been in a relationship with Concilión Verónico’s partner, which allegedly provoked the armed attack.

With the evidence presented during the judicial process, the judge issued the 25-year sentence along with the financial penalties.
