Chelem, Yucatán — A 46-year-old man suffered severe burns after he was allegedly bound hand and foot, doused with fuel and set alight inside a beach property in this coastal community near Progreso, authorities said.

The man, known locally as “Jerry,” was found during the early hours of the morning when police officers responded to the property. Investigators also located a container of gasoline at the scene, which they believe was used in the attack.

Despite his condition, the victim was able to identify his alleged attacker, known by the nickname “Chucho el Coquero,” and that information has been folded into the search for the suspect.

Paramedics from the Public Security Department (SSP) treated him at the scene before taking him to the Agustín O’Hórán General Hospital in Mérida, where he was receiving specialist care for his burns.

Search operation launched

SSP officers and the Progreso coordinated police deployed a search operation to locate the suspect. In parallel, investigators opened inquiries into how the attack unfolded and who was responsible.

People close to the victim said Jerry is a member of the LGBT+ community, raising concern that the attack may have been motivated by prejudice or discrimination. Authorities have not established an official motive and must determine whether bias played a role, as well as clarify the sequence of events and whether anyone else took part.

The severity of his injuries has alarmed residents of Chelem, who are awaiting progress in the investigation and the arrest of the alleged attacker.
