Cancún Drivers Face Hours-Long Waits for Plate Exchange

Long lines of drivers waiting at vehicle plate exchange modules in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Despite the relaxation of requirements, drivers continue to face long lines at vehicle plate exchange modules in Cancún, where high demand has kept service points saturated this Monday, January 5.

The 2026 plate exchange program began on January 2 with the requirement of registration in the State Taxpayer Registry (REC), which mandated presenting the Tax Status Certificate. This requirement caused failures in the digital platform and extensive waits at various modules, particularly at the one located on Avenida Chac Mool.

In response to citizen complaints and technical problems recorded during the first days, the Secretary of Government decided to streamline the process and eliminate the obligation to present the Tax Status Certificate, now allowing the procedure to be completed solely with the Unique Population Registry Code (CURP).

However, the high demand continues to exceed service capacity. From early hours, lines form that extend for several hours, a situation that maintains dissatisfaction among drivers.

State authorities reiterated their call to citizens to schedule appointments online and avoid crowds, while the plate exchange program advances amid strong operational pressure at Cancún’s modules.
