Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The containment of Screwworm infestations in Mexico has yielded positive results for the livestock sector, with the gradual reopening of export ports to the United States scheduled to begin on July 7. Jorge Aguilar Osorio, Secretary of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (SEDARPE), confirmed the development following an announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Currently, Quintana Roo reports only five active cases of the parasitic infestation.
Coordinated Efforts Lead to Progress
The measure follows a joint effort between the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the USDA and Mexican authorities to strengthen surveillance, detection, and eradication of the Screwworm. In Quintana Roo, the state government, under Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa’s New Agreement for Well-Being and Development, has collaborated closely with ranchers to contain outbreaks, ensuring timely reporting and treatment.
Aguilar Osorio noted that while 51 confirmed cases have been officially recorded in the state, only five remain active. All affected livestock have received treatment, with successful recoveries reported.
“This has been a collective effort,” Aguilar stated. “Ranchers have been our primary allies, alongside the Livestock Health Committee and the Mexico-U.S. Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Other Exotic Animal Diseases (CPA). Their prompt reporting allowed us to treat the animals without any losses. We remain vigilant, as the issue persists.”
Phased Reopening of Export Ports
The U.S. Department of Agriculture outlined a phased reopening schedule:
- July 7: Douglas, Arizona
- July 14: Columbus, New Mexico
- July 21: Santa Teresa, New Mexico
- August 18: Del Río, Texas
- September 15: Laredo, Texas
Aguilar emphasized that the resumption of livestock exports marks an encouraging milestone for shared prosperity. The achievement reflects the dedication of ranchers and the coordinated efforts of federal, state, and international institutions, demonstrating technical competence, sanitary responsibility, and cross-border collaboration.
