Izamal, Yucatán — The city of Izamal hosted the official launch of the national strategy "Rutas Mágicas de Color" (Magical Color Routes) to mark International Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27. The program aims to beautify and dignify urban spaces through the painting of facades and artistic murals.

This initiative seeks to strengthen community identity and enrich the visitor experience while boosting tourism activity in the towns of Yucatán.

What Does the "Rutas Mágicas de Color" Program Entail?

The project is being developed as part of the State Development Plan "Renacimiento Maya" (Maya Renaissance), promoted by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena. Its purpose is to decentralize tourism and spread its benefits to more communities across the state.

The strategy will intervene on more than 25,000 square meters of facades across six municipalities: Izamal, Maní, Motul, Progreso, Río Lagartos, and Valladolid. The work is scheduled for completion in November and involves the application of exterior-grade paint, suitable for both regular properties and historical buildings, with the goal of revitalizing streets and preserving the architectural essence of each locality.

What is the Investment for the Tourism Beautification?

The initiative represents a joint investment of 3 million 760 thousand pesos. Of this figure, 1 million pesos comes from the State Government through the Secretariat of Tourism Development (Sefotur), 880 thousand pesos are contributed by the participating municipalities, and 1 million 880 thousand pesos are provided by the company Comex, one of the project's main allies.

The program also has the support of the civil association Corazón Urbano, authorities from the three levels of government, and the active participation of local communities, reinforcing the collaborative nature of the strategy.

Which Authorities Participated in the Program Launch in Izamal?

The event was led by the head of Sefotur, Darío Flota Ocampo, accompanied by the municipal president of Izamal, Melissa Puga Rodríguez, as well as representatives from Comex, Corazón Urbano, and the DIF Yucatán. The mayors of Río Lagartos and Motul also attended, along with delegates from Progreso, Valladolid, and Maní.

In his address, Flota Ocampo emphasized that the initiative aligns with the international theme "Tourism and Sustainable Transformation," noting that the renewed facades will not only reflect the cultural identity of each town but will also serve as an attraction for national and international tourists.

As part of the inaugural event, Sefotur delivered the recently remodeled Izamal Tourist Information Module, reinforcing the commitment to improving tourist infrastructure in the state.
