Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The island municipality of Isla Mujeres has been nominated for the Magical Towns Excellence Awards 2026, recognizing its commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental protection.

Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde announced that Isla Mujeres is competing in three categories: Inclusion and Accessibility, Nature for its Municipal Beach Cleaning and Certification Program, and Sustainability for its Sea Turtle Protection and Care Program and the Kab Xoc Shark Initiative.

“These nominations reflect Isla Mujeres’ firm commitment to preserving its natural resources,” Gómez Ricalde said. “Our Sea Turtle Conservation Program has been a pioneer in Latin America for decades, establishing us as a reference point for protecting this species.”

The awards recognize Mexico’s Magical Towns for best practices in tourism and environmental management. Public voting accounts for 40% of the final score, and officials are encouraging residents, visitors, and supporters to vote for Isla Mujeres through the official link: https://bit.ly/4dzHmvs
