Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres has established a committee to protect sea turtles ahead of the 2026 nesting season, aiming to safeguard the marine reptiles that arrive annually on the island’s beaches.

Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde led the installation of the Sea Turtle Protection and Care Committee at the Costa Mujeres Control and Command Center C2. Committee members took an oath of office, pledging to coordinate actions between federal, state, and municipal authorities, along with associations and private initiatives.

The committee will focus on protecting nests, monitoring beaches, and supporting the release of hatchlings. Yamira Yaneth Ruiz Noh, Director of Environment and Ecology, emphasized that the effort requires community-wide participation, not just government action.

“Protecting sea turtles helps maintain environmental balance and strengthens the natural wealth that distinguishes Isla Mujeres,” Ruiz Noh stated.

She added that the committee’s installation officially launches the 2026 season for the island’s turtle camp, reaffirming the commitment to nature conservation and the well-being of sea turtles.
