Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has officially announced the launch of two culinary competitions: the 4th Annual "El Cangrejito Playero" Ceviche Contest 2025 and the 4th Annual Isla Mujeres Cocktail Contest 2025. Organized by the General Directorate of Economic Development and Tourism, these events aim to celebrate local identity, pride, and economic growth through traditional cuisine.
Ceviche Contest to Highlight Island Flavors
The ceviche competition will take place on Sunday, August 10, at 8:00 p.m. in the Municipal Plaza. Open to all participants, the contest encourages submissions featuring ceviche recipes or variations made with ingredients representative of Isla Mujeres.
Registration costs 500 pesos, with applications accepted until Friday, August 8. Each contestant must prepare at least three portions for the judges, with the remainder available for public tasting. The jury will award prizes to the top three winners, and all participants will receive recognition.
Cocktail Contest to Spotlight Local Mixology
The cocktail competition will follow on Saturday, August 16, also at 8:00 p.m. in the same location. This event focuses on beverages that reflect the island’s identity through the use of locally sourced ingredients.
Open to the general public, registration closes on Friday, August 15. Similar to the ceviche contest, participants must present their creations to the judges, emphasizing cultural authenticity in their presentations.
Strengthening Tourism and Local Economy
Hernán Magaña Vargas, Director General of Economic Development and Tourism, stated that these contests provide an opportunity for visitors and tourists to experience the richness of Isla Mujeres through its flavors.
"We want Isla Mujeres to remain a benchmark not only for its natural beauty but also for its cultural richness and unique taste," he said.
Magaña Vargas confirmed that all participants will receive certificates, with the top three winners in each contest awarded special recognition.
Through these initiatives, the Isla Mujeres government reaffirms its commitment to promoting traditions that enhance local well-being and tourism appeal.
