Isla Mujeres Declares Regatta Participants Distinguished Guests

Mayor Atenea Gomez Ricalde presents certificates to regatta participants during a city council session in Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The Isla Mujeres City Council has declared participants of the 53rd Sun-to-Sun Regatta and the 52nd Friends Regatta as distinguished guests, in a move aimed at strengthening ties with St. Petersburg, Florida, and promoting nautical tourism.

During the Fifth Public and Solemn Session, Mayor Atenea Gomez Ricalde presented certificates to the crews, highlighting their contribution to sports, international exchange, and the promotion of Isla Mujeres as a world-class tourist destination.

The council also declared April 30 to May 8 as the 53rd Anniversary Week of the Sun-to-Sun Regatta, recognizing the event’s historical importance in uniting communities, yacht clubs, families, and sailors around a shared love for the sea.

Gomez made a special recognition to Enrique Lima Zuno, president of the Isla Mujeres Yacht Club and main promoter of these regattas, for his commitment and dedication to keeping the nautical tradition alive.

“Today is a beautiful day for our municipality because we welcome people who share something very deep with us: love for the sea. For those of us who live in Isla Mujeres, the sea is part of our daily life, our history, our families, our work, and our identity,” the mayor said.

Gomez emphasized that both regattas represent much more than a competition, as they drive visitor arrivals, generate economic benefits, strengthen nautical tourism, and consolidate Isla Mujeres’ relationship with the national and international maritime community.

“These regattas are much more than a journey. They are a tradition that strengthens Isla Mujeres’ relationship with the national and international nautical community. They are a meeting of friendship between clubs, crews, families, and communities that share a fondness for the sea,” she stated.
