Cancún, Quintana Roo — An IMSS nurse identified only as Alejandra has been released after what her supporters describe as an arbitrary detention marked by procedural irregularities and false official records. The State Prosecutor’s Office dropped the case following public pressure from family, colleagues, and media outlets.
The detention occurred last Friday when authorities removed Alejandra from her workplace under the pretense that she was needed as a witness. Instead, she was held incommunicado and later charged with “disobedience to private parties,” a legal provision frequently used by officials to detain individuals while building stronger cases. The arrest occurred without a judicial order and extended beyond the constitutional 48-hour limit.
The case revealed significant administrative failures when the National Detention Registry incorrectly listed Alejandra as being held at the Cancún Municipal Detention Center, when she was actually in custody in Playa del Carmen. This error prevented her family and legal team from locating her for hours.
Authorities had linked Alejandra to an investigation into illicit substances being supplied to minors at a Villas del Sol secondary school, but the lack of direct evidence and procedural errors suggest she may have been targeted as a scapegoat to address public outrage over the school incident.
Her release at IMSS Hospital 18 came after civil demonstrations outside the Prosecutor’s Office demanding justice. The case highlights ongoing concerns about due process violations in Quintana Roo’s justice system.
