Tulum, Quintana Roo — A hotel worker from Chemuyil is fighting for his life after being struck by a car on Federal Highway 307 early Monday morning, in a hit-and-run that has sparked outrage among witnesses.
The victim, identified as José María, was returning from his job at a Riviera Maya hotel when a vehicle hit him near kilometer 250, in front of the Bahía Príncipe resort complex. The impact threw him several meters onto the pavement, leaving him with severe injuries.
Witnesses reported that the motorcycle was destroyed, with debris scattered across the road. They immediately called 911.
Paramedics arrived and provided pre-hospital care before rushing José María to the General Hospital of Playa del Carmen in critical condition, with multiple traumatic injuries.
A car with visible front-end damage remained at the scene. National Guard highway division officers cordoned off the area and began collecting evidence. Traffic was partially affected for several minutes.
According to witnesses, the driver and another occupant fled the scene on foot shortly after the crash, leaving a woman inside the vehicle. This angered bystanders, who said the motorcyclist lay injured for several minutes without help from the car’s occupants.
Authorities are investigating the incident and working to identify the driver. The crash highlights the ongoing dangers faced by workers and motorcyclists traveling on Highway 307, especially at night, where high-impact accidents continue to occur.
