Merida, Yucatan — A sexual assault complaint filed by a worker at a hotel in the Yucatan capital has sparked public outrage and raised questions about institutional response to such cases.
The victim, identified as Maria “N.”, told the Yucatan State Prosecutor’s Office that her supervisor, Jose Eduardo “N.”, physically and sexually assaulted her at their workplace. She said she started working as an administrative assistant in October 2024 and was repeatedly subjected to harassment by the accused, who allegedly invited her out on dates. Each refusal, she claimed, led to workplace retaliation.
The most serious incident allegedly occurred on March 14, 2025, when the supervisor arrived at the hotel intoxicated, called her in, and assaulted her. A week later, on March 21, the victim filed a formal complaint with prosecutors, who conducted medical exams that she says confirmed injuries.
However, the investigation has stalled, according to the complaint. The prosecutor’s office requested security camera footage from the hotel, but the establishment has not handed it over, potentially hindering the case. The incident has also spread on social media, where users allege the hotel has been deleting comments and posts related to the complaint, increasing demands for transparency.
The victim stated she may not be the only person to have faced similar situations with the accused and urged authorities to expand the investigation to identify other possible victims.
As of now, no arrests have been made and no court date has been set. The case remains under investigation.
