Homeless Seniors in Cancun Refuse Shelter Despite Extreme Weather Risks

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A significant number of elderly homeless people in Cancun are choosing to remain on the streets rather than move to temporary shelters, according to social organizations and community support groups.

Reports from associations focused on community care indicate that many older adults refuse shelter due to mental health issues, alcohol consumption, or distrust of assistance centers.

The situation becomes more concerning during periods of extreme heat and heavy rain, as these individuals remain exposed to risks such as dehydration, illness, and urban violence.

Members of social collectives noted that some elderly people have lived on the streets for years, making it difficult for them to accept institutional support or change their survival habits.

They also pointed out that many cases involve family abandonment, lack of official documents, and medical problems that complicate comprehensive care.

In response, civil organizations continue to conduct patrols and outreach efforts to provide food, basic assistance, and shelter alternatives, though they acknowledge that convincing people to go to a shelter remains one of their biggest challenges.
