Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Intense rainfall recorded around midday on Friday in the northern zone of the state has caused severe flooding and traffic congestion in various areas of Playa del Carmen.
Among the most affected areas are the Misión de Las Flores, La Guadalupana, Villas del Sol, and Las Palmas subdivisions; the Luis Donaldo Colosio and Gonzalo Guerrero neighborhoods; as well as the municipal access on the Puerto Morelos–Playa del Carmen highway stretch.
Due to this “downpour,” several crews from Civil Protection and Public Services dispersed throughout the city to clean absorption wells that were obstructed by garbage.
According to the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters, the precipitation originated from the combination of high temperatures and the influx of tropical maritime air.
These meteorological conditions, according to the agency, favored the formation of a zone of bad weather with rainfall and electrical activity over Playa del Carmen and regions of Quintana Roo.
For their part, elements of the Traffic Directorate launched an operation of patrols through the busiest streets to identify critical points and provide immediate assistance to affected drivers.
Precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day, so authorities’ recommendation for motorists is to exercise extreme caution, respect speed limits, and be alert to dangerous objects on the road.
