Playa del Carmen, MX. — Federal Deputy Ernesto Sánchez Rodríguez stated in a brief interview that the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) project crossing the seabed from Playa del Carmen to the island of Cozumel is damaging the environment.
He elaborated by saying that adequate studies for its implementation are lacking and consequently this has generated discontent among environmentalists and other individuals.
It should be recalled that the project named the Playa del Carmen – Chankanaab II Transmission Line was presented by the CFE in 2022 and in August 2023 received approval from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). However recently as work began to install this line along the seabed it drew the attention of various groups who oppose it due to the damage to the reef which they maintain will be caused.
During his visit to this destination the federal legislator also expressed his disagreement with the high electricity supply rates paid here.
He said that President Claudia Sheinbaum’s narrative about investments for electricity generation is a fallacy because citizens simply do not see them.
