Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Armed gunmen opened fire on a bar in the heart of Playa del Carmen on Thursday night, unleashing more than 20 shots and prompting a large-scale police operation, authorities said.
The attack targeted Bar Las Palmas, formerly known as Las Hamacas, located on Avenida 30 near Calle 2 — a busy commercial area frequented by locals and tourists. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before the assailants fled the scene.
Police officers from the Municipal and State forces, along with other security agencies, quickly cordoned off the area and preserved the scene for investigators. Personnel from the State Prosecutor’s Office collected ballistic evidence and launched an inquiry.
As of late Thursday, officials reported no injuries or fatalities, and no arrests had been made. The motive for the attack remains under investigation.
The shooting adds to a series of violent incidents at nightlife venues along the Riviera Maya, keeping security forces on alert.
