Cancun, Quintana Roo — Hundreds of families, young people, and tourists gathered at Malecón Tajamar on Thursday to watch Mexico’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup, celebrating the national team’s 2-0 victory over South Africa on a giant screen.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa joined the crowd, mingling with fans from the stands, taking photos, and cheering alongside attendees. The event, part of the Fut Fest organized for the tournament, turned the waterfront promenade into a festive hub of soccer passion and community spirit.

Attendees waved flags, applauded goals, and shared the excitement of the World Cup’s opening day. Lezama greeted families and posed for pictures, blending in as a fan among the crowd.

The atmosphere at Malecón Tajamar underscored the unifying power of soccer, drawing people of all ages together for a collective celebration of Mexico’s win.
