Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Gunmen opened fire Sunday night at the newly opened seafood restaurant El Camarón Guasaveño, killing one person and wounding three others, authorities said.

The attack occurred on Avenida CTM at Bulevar Playa del Carmen. Armed individuals entered the establishment and began shooting at patrons, causing panic among customers and staff who scrambled for cover, according to preliminary reports.

Municipal and state police, along with National Guard officers, responded to the scene after a 911 call. Paramedics treated the wounded and transported them to local hospitals.

The deceased was identified as Marcos, a 35-year-old employee originally from Mexico City. No information was immediately available on the condition of the injured, and no arrests have been reported.

Investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office cordoned off the area to collect ballistic evidence and conduct initial inquiries. While the motive remains under investigation, authorities are exploring the possibility that the attack was linked to extortion or “piso” (protection) payments. A direct targeted attack has not been ruled out.

The restaurant, which opened less than a month ago, had quickly become popular, featuring three floors of service and specializing in seafood.

The State Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.
