Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Vacation rentals here have begun charging guests an environmental sanitation fee as of Sept. 1, but they remain far from matching the tax burden shouldered by hotels, according to a local hotel industry leader.
Offner Arjona, president of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa del Carmen, said hoteliers pay municipal, state and federal fees and also comply with a range of requirements for serving guests — obligations he said have no real equivalent for vacation rentals.
Arjona also noted that the municipality is currently extending an invitation, not a requirement, for vacation rentals to register and regularize their operations, and that a large number of them have yet to do so.
Officials began the regularization effort with the platform Airbnb, but other platforms — including Booking, Guesty, Home Away and Home Exchange, among others — also operate in the area.
