Cozumel, Quintana Roo — German swimmer Renate Herberger has announced a new aquatic journey in the waters of Cozumel to promote the defense of the island’s coral reefs.
The athlete will cover approximately 140 kilometers by swimming around Cozumel, starting this Thursday, January 29, from the pier at kilometer 3 of the southern coastal highway. The journey includes daily six-hour sessions beginning at 7 a.m.
This will be the third time Herberger has undertaken such a challenge on the island, following editions in 2015 and 2019. This time, the goal is to raise awareness about the conservation of the marine ecosystem and the removal of artificial structures that affect natural reefs.
Environmental organizations, such as the CIMAC group, have called on the community to join with logistical support and messages in favor of marine protection.
