Cancun, Quintana Roo — A former municipal official from Tulum has been arrested on domestic violence charges, the state prosecutor announced, vowing that his office will not tolerate attacks against women.
Raciel Lopez Salazar, the attorney general of Quintana Roo, said the arrest warrant was executed in Benito Juarez and the suspect was transferred to Playa del Carmen, where he was turned over to a judge.
According to the investigation, the victim was in a romantic relationship with the accused and suffered verbal and physical abuse, including a blow to the face. The woman managed to record a struggle on her cellphone when the suspect tried to snatch the device, and that footage is part of the evidence, prosecutors said.
In another incident, the former official went to the victim’s home to harass her, threaten her, and demand she drop the complaint. He allegedly warned her she would lose the legal case because she was financially dependent on him, and threatened further consequences.
Lopez Salazar said the evidence was sufficient for a judge to order pretrial detention. “His legal situation will be resolved tomorrow,” the prosecutor said.
He dismissed rumors on social media that the case had political or electoral motives. “There are no political or electoral issues here. What we can document is that we will not tolerate violence against women, no matter who the perpetrator is,” he said.
