Former Playa del Carmen Mayor and Treasurer Investigated for Misappropriation of Over $4 Million

Lili Campos and Kira Iris, former mayor and treasurer of Playa del Carmen, under investigation for alleged embezzlement of over 80 million pesos.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Former Mayor Lili Campos Miranda and her ex-treasurer, Kira Iris San, are under investigation for allegedly embezzling more than 80 million pesos (approximately $4.4 million) during the 2021-2024 municipal administration.

Documents obtained through transparency requests by Sol Quintana Roo, signed by Cristina Alcerreca Manzanero, head of Playa del Carmen’s Internal Control Office, indicate that both former officials are being investigated for possible bribery and embezzlement related to the alleged diversion of public funds.

The 12 case files have been submitted to the state’s Administrative and Anti-Corruption Court. In the coming days or weeks, they could be forwarded to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office for criminal proceedings before judges in Playa del Carmen’s accusatory criminal justice system.

Among the irregularities identified are discrepancies totaling more than 88 million pesos for fiscal year 2023, primarily involving public works and a lack of documentation for federal funds. Inconsistencies were also flagged in expenses linked to trips by the Inter Playa del Carmen soccer team.

Kira Iris San is currently pursuing a legal strategy based on filing multiple amparo injunctions as investigations continue into the alleged financial damage detected in the previous municipal administration.
