Cancun, Quintana Roo — A foreign tourist was caught on video assaulting a service worker at Cancun International Airport, sparking a divided online debate about tourist behavior and airport service quality.
The incident, which occurred at the Benito Juárez municipality airport terminal, shows the tourist hitting a service provider with a water bottle. The worker responded with a kick in self-defense before the tourist struck again, prompting others to intervene.
A person recording the altercation can be heard telling the tourist to calm down and warning that the video would be shared online. The tourist claimed the worker hit him first, but witnesses countered that the worker was only defending himself after the visitor became violent.
The video has generated conflicting reactions on social media. Some users argue that Cancun airport service providers have earned their negative reputation through poor treatment of tourists, while others maintain that no behavior justifies violent attacks by foreign visitors.
Many commenters expressed that they don’t want aggressive tourists visiting Mexican destinations, but also criticized rude service providers who damage the country’s tourism image.
Authorities are investigating the assault at Cancun International Airport, which reportedly began with the foreign tourist’s actions.
