Emergency responders at the scene of a fatal head-on collision on the Merida-Celestun highway in Yucatan, Mexico.

Merida, Yucatan — A violent head-on collision on the Merida-Celestun highway Monday left five people dead, including two elementary school teachers, a pregnant woman, a young child, and a teenager, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. at kilometer 52+500 near the Kinchil-Celestun stretch. A Mitsubishi SUV carrying tourists allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into a compact Changan sedan.

The sedan was carrying teachers from the preschool “Jugamos a Aprender” returning to Merida after work. The driver, identified as Diana “N,” had just picked up her young daughter from the “Bertha Maria Gonzalez” elementary school before heading home.

The impact destroyed both vehicles. Two teachers and the child died instantly, with some victims thrown from the car. One of the deceased teachers was about six months pregnant.

The sole survivor from the sedan was a teacher in the front passenger seat, who was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by rescue crews using hydraulic equipment. She was rushed to a hospital in Merida in serious condition.

In the SUV, one tourist and a child aged about 10 or 11 died at the scene. The SUV driver was rescued alive and taken to the Dr. Agustin O’Horan General Hospital but later died from his injuries, bringing the death toll to five.

Multiple ambulances from the Public Security Department (SSP), Kinchil paramedics, firefighters, and rescue units responded. The highway was partially closed as State Prosecutor’s Office investigators and forensic personnel processed the scene and removed the bodies.

The accident sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with hundreds mourning the teachers, the child, and the pregnant woman. Many called for improved road safety on the state highway, which has seen several severe crashes.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash and determining responsibility.
