Mexico City, Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the Maya Train’s freight line will be inaugurated by late 2026. “It is progressing as planned, with no delays,” she stated on Friday.

According to Sheinbaum, the interoceanic Line K of the train, stretching from Ixtepec, Oaxaca, to Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, is set to launch by mid-2026. She emphasized that the Mexican government’s strategic projects are financially viable and contribute to national development.

For Quintana Roo, she highlighted both the Maya Train and the Tulum International Airport as key achievements. “Examples of this include the Maya Train, which has transported over one million passengers to date, and the Tulum International Airport, which has served more than two million people,” she said.

She also referenced other government initiatives, such as the Mundo Maya hotels and their affiliated parks, which offer 10 affordable tourist packages this summer. Additionally, she noted the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), which has handled 13.5 million passengers with a 90.14% satisfaction rate, and Mexico’s state airline, which maintains a 93% passenger rate and has transported 600,000 people so far.

“Everything is backed by business models and is functioning. Beyond the professionalism of those leading these projects, their dedication to the country, discipline, and expertise ensure that monthly objectives are met,” Sheinbaum declared during a morning press conference.

She affirmed that the Maya Train is an operational transportation system facing no delays and will generate profits once the full fleet of trains is deployed, along with the completion of its freight line. The freight line is scheduled to open by late 2026, coinciding with the launch of Line K.

Óscar David Lozano, Director General of Tren Maya, reported that all 34 stations are now operational. As of July 15, 2025, the system has transported 1,359,317 passengers, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 19%.

Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez, Commander of the Felipe Ángeles Engineering Group, confirmed that the first phase of the Maya Train’s freight line will be completed within a year and a half. This phase includes intermodal terminals in Palenque, Progreso, Poxilá, and Cancún.

The project has created approximately 5,000 jobs, with over 4,000 currently active. Additionally, 66.7 kilometers of railway branches are being constructed and rehabilitated simultaneously.
