Mexico City — FIFA has decided to keep the Mexico vs. England Round of 16 match at its original 6 PM kickoff time on Sunday, reversing a rumored change to noon amid a thunderstorm threat, according to multiple reports.
Earlier this week, several media outlets citing FIFA sources reported that the match at Estadio Azteca would be moved to midday due to a forecast of electrical storms at 6 PM. However, after strong objections from both national federations, the governing body opted to maintain the original schedule.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre had publicly criticized the proposed change, calling it disruptive. The English Football Association also expressed its displeasure with the alteration.
FIFA has not yet issued an official statement, but an announcement is expected later Friday to clarify the situation.
