Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A businesswoman boarded a ferry at the maritime terminal to confront passengers about a missing bracelet from her store, sparking a confrontation that required police intervention.
The incident began when the owner of a shop on Matamoros Street noticed a bracelet was missing after reviewing security camera footage. The footage showed a woman and her daughter behaving suspiciously, inspecting merchandise and then claiming they could not pay with their card.
The businesswoman tracked the passengers to the ferry and, with the help of port authority and ferry staff, located them on the upper deck. She informed them that the video showed they were the only ones near the item when it disappeared.
A Mexican Navy officer attempted to mediate, persuading the accused to pay 900 pesos — three times the bracelet’s value of 300 pesos — to avoid police involvement. After some discussion, three women and two children left the ferry and paid the amount.
The conflict escalated when the businesswoman said she could not remove the video already circulating on social media, as it belonged to another person’s account. A Navy officer then intervened to prevent further confrontation at the terminal.
When police arrived, officer Jorge Soto Vargas told the businesswoman that since an agreement had been reached, no arrests would be made. He later reportedly provided her personal information to the other party for a potential counterclaim. The businesswoman said she held the officer responsible for any misuse of her data.
