Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Severe erosion at El Recodo Beach has left tourist boat operators without a designated boarding area, further complicating operations due to the presence of anti-sargassum barriers. José Gómez Burgos, secretary of the Mar Caribe tourism cooperative, stated that the lack of a safe and marked space for tourists has forced operators to pick up passengers at alternative locations.
Coastal Erosion and Sargassum Disrupt Operations
Gómez Burgos explained that the area previously had designated swimming zones and protective measures for beachgoers. However, erosion has eliminated these demarcations, while sargassum barriers now obstruct boat access.
“Now we only have the shoreline and the anti-sargassum barriers blocking our free movement,” he said. The cooperative urgently requires a safe boarding area for tourists.
Restoration Efforts Underway
A coastal study is currently being conducted to restore the beach and reorganize the area. Gómez Burgos expressed hope that these measures will resolve the ongoing challenges faced by local operators.
The situation highlights the broader environmental and logistical pressures affecting tourism-dependent regions in Quintana Roo.
