34 Dead in Quintana Roo During Easter Holiday Period

Cancún, Mexico — The Easter holiday period, spanning from April 11 to April 27, resulted in 34 fatalities across Quintana Roo’s tourist zones, according to security authorities. The leading causes of death were traffic accidents and drownings.

Traffic Incidents Claim 30 Lives

A total of 80 vehicular accidents were reported on highways and municipal roads, resulting in 12 deaths. Additionally, 134 motorcycle-related incidents occurred, claiming 18 lives.

Nine incidents were recorded in beach and recreational water areas, leading to four fatalities. Two deaths occurred in Cancún, one in Playa del Carmen, and one in the southern region of the state.

Arrests and Seizures During the Holiday

National Guard Inspector Uriel Cruz reported that 51 individuals were detained for various offenses during the holiday period. Four were arrested for consuming illegal substances on beaches, seven for public disturbances under the influence of alcohol, and 16 for drug-related crimes. Another 24 vendors were detained for operating on beaches without proper permits.

Authorities also collaborated with the National Migration Institute to rescue seven foreign nationals who were being held against their will in Playa del Carmen.

Confiscated Items

Security operations led to the seizure of:

  • Two long firearms
  • Three handguns
  • Two magazines
  • 131 rounds of ammunition of various calibers
  • One vehicle linked to high-impact crimes
  • Two stolen motorcycles
  • Multiple doses of narcotics and cash
