Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Personnel from the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change in Playa del Carmen responded to a report of a spider monkey struck by a vehicle on Monday afternoon along Federal Highway 307 near the Mayakoba area.
Upon arrival, biologists discovered the lifeless body of a juvenile monkey that succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. During their inspection, authorities observed an adult female—presumed to be the mother of the deceased juvenile—appearing disoriented nearby. However, the animal retreated into the jungle before direct contact could be made.
A video recording captured the female monkey moving deeper into the ecosystem. In response, environmental authorities have initiated monitoring efforts in the area to assess the adult monkey’s health. The objective is to locate the animal and, if necessary, provide specialized medical care to ensure its recovery.

The incident follows recent efforts by Playa del Carmen authorities to rehabilitate and reintroduce wildlife, including opossums, into their natural habitat.
